Wirral Buddhists celebrate
To celebrate its 25th anniversary the Wirral Dechen Kagyu Buddhist Group recently held a series of events in Birkenhead and West Kirby.
These included an illustrated talk entitled ‘Buddhism in Pictures’ which explained the foundation of Buddhism, its main teachings and its spread throughout the world. The Group also held a two-part course entitled ‘Buddhism: The Facts behind the Myths’. This challenged the quasi-mystical interpretation which Buddhism sometimes receives and showed how it is a very practical religion that is rooted in a realisation of the ordinary nature of reality. It also stressed the importance of finding an authentic teacher.
Before the final session, the Group was visited by an ordained shrine builder from the Kailash Centre (the only other Buddhist group on the Wirral, established shortly after the Dechen Group). He wanted to share in the anniversary celebration and presented the Group with a Rupa (statue) for the occasion.
Group members, old and new, appreciated the opportunity to acknowledge this connection and see themselves as part of a wider picture of Buddhist activity on the Wirral. Now we’re looking forward to the next 25 years!
